While plenty of thought is often given to the safe shipping of products to their destinations, most of us don’t give much consideration to the way those products are secured onto pallets. While steel strapping dominated the market for years, plastic strapping has been usurping its role more recently, thanks to its many advantages.

Advantages of Plastic Strapping

Plastic strapping offers many benefits over antiquated steel strapping. Among others, these include:

  • Higher shock reserve. Packaged goods are frequently exposed to shocks during transportation. These shocks are better absorbed by plastic than by steel, making plastic a better option for increasing load security.
  • No risk of rust. While steel can rust in the rain, plastic strapping carries no such danger.
  • Safety of packaged goods. A common problem with steep strapping is the damage its sharp edges can inflict on packaged goods. Plastic strapping does not have sharp edges, eliminating this concern.
  • Lower cost. Plastic strapping is generally about half the price of steel rated for the same breaking strength.

Types of Plastic Strapping

Generally speaking, there are three major types of plastic straps: polypropylene strapping, PET strapping, and polyester strapping.

Polypropylene strapping has the lowest breaking strength of the three forms of webbing, but it has the highest elongation value at approximately 20%. PET strapping outstrips polypropylene by almost double in terms of breaking strength for the same dimension, but elongation is only half as high. Polyester textile strapping boasts the highest breaking strength and lowest elongation, making it the closest option to steel strapping. There are a few types of polyester strapping, including hot melt, woven, and composite polyester, that each yield different results.

Plastic straps have proven to be extremely successful replacements for steel ones, providing superior protection at reduced costs. The massive shift toward plastic strapping in the packaging industry is certainly justified, helping to keep products safer throughout shipment and proving less expensive than its predecessor.
